Grizzly Bear Monitoring Project - Nahatlatch Watershed - 2007

In partnership with the Boothroyd Indian Band in the Fraser Canyon, Cascadia Biological Services was retained to develop and implement a grizzly monitoring program for the 2007 field season.  As part of this monitoring program a total of 50 sites will be baited in order to obtain DNA samples for analysis.  DNA samples are obtained by placing barbed wire at knee high level to obtain hair samples as bears try and navigate through to the baited traps.  As with all things, technology also plays a role in today's assessment methodology.  The newer technology includes remote cameras that allow biologist to take pictures and videos of the bears at night visiting the baited traps.  Pictures are then correlated to DNA samples and overall distribution determined.  The following represents a few of the pictures taken to date for sites labelled 1-12.  A map detailing the general site locations (+/- 1000m for safety reasons) is also provided below....enjoy!!
